If you would like to consider undertaking an apprenticeship with us you'll need:

  • L2 NCEA 8 credits (or more in each subject) in Maths, English and Science (preferably an industry related science).
  • to have a minimum of a restricted manual drivers licence and a car
  • at least New Zealand Residency
  • good colour vision.

What will I do?

 
 
A typical electrical apprenticeship takes around 3½ years to complete and involves two different learning environments:

On-job training – Your host company will pair you with fully qualified electricians.  By watching, learning and progressively doing more of the job yourself, you’ll reach a level of competence where you can do the job unaided. No day will ever be the same as you’ll encounter a wide range of jobs and situations, keeping things interesting and stimulating. Expect plenty of challenges that will extend and challenge you, from learning how to problem solve to responding to increasing on-the-job independence.


Off-job training – More than just knowing how to do the job competently and safely, you need to learn why it must be done a certain way. This is achieved by completing study courses and ultimately sitting your Electrical Theory and Regulations exams in your final year. This will involve study at home and attending Electrical Training Company evening classes and block courses at our own training centres. You’ll complete on-going assignments, assessments and final examinations. But don’t worry, at every step you’ll have access to the best co-ordinators/mentors and trainers around.
