Apprentice of the Year Awards and Excellence Foundation Launch

The finalists of the 2016 etco* Apprentice of the Year and Most Improved Apprentice Awards were front and centre during the etco* Awards evening at the Waipuna Hotel on Thursday 23 February 2017.

etco* National Apprenticeship Manager Murray Samson introduced the finalists who all received certificates, a cheque from etco* and vouchers from our generous sponsor TransNet.

This year the Master Electricians Challenge Finals were held at the Hilton, Lake Taupo on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th October with the winners announced at the Awards dinner on the Friday evening.

There were 5 finalists in each of the Commercial/Domestic and Industrial categories. All finalists had to face a business structure challenge and five workstations to complete a range of tough tasks designed to replicate a ‘real industry’ setting using the latest technology, with the winner of each also awarded a prize.

There should be no reason for students in Invercargill to miss their nightclasses now. The old, cold classrooms have now been replaced with brighter, cleaner and much warmer rooms ready for the new semester. “The new suspended ceilings, LED lighting and heat pumps have made a huge difference to the learning environment and the double glazing has significantly reduced the noise from the road,” says local Apprenticeship Coordinator John Whitaker.

Have you ever heard of Powertool Drag Racing?  It is a truly insane event where, as the name suggests, disc grinders and high powered drills are given wheels and raced against each other to find out who has the fastest electric tool in the country. And it will create a spectator frenzy when the racing starts at the Evolocity National Finals in Christchurch in November.

It is that time of the year again when etco* apprentices throughout the country accept the challenge to test their skills and knowledge against their peers, both within and external to etco*.

The Master Electrician Challenge preliminary competitions are being held throughout the country in July and August to find the very best to compete at the national Finals in Taupo later in the year.

etco* and Career Navigator will be working even closer together in the future to match bright, keen young school leavers with the employment and continuing education opportunities available through etco*.

This new partnership will see etco* personnel support Career Navigator’s activities in schools, providing electrical industry expertise to those students considering starting their tertiary education as a paid electrical apprentice.

A remarkable transformation has taken place in Classroom 6 at etco*s Mt Wellington training centre which includes the addition of electrical board panels and ergonomic chairs and desks. etco* National Training Manager Gary Whittaker commented, “I had been considering how we could better engage our students, so after discussions with my colleagues Colin Gibson (Regional Training Manager) and Corry Foord (Workshop Supervisor), the result is our complete upgrade of Classroom 6.”

Friday 12th February 2016 saw one of the most important nights in etco*s calendar - the company’s 25th Anniversary Gala Evening and the Apprentice of the Year Awards. etco* has come along way from its humble beginnings in 1991 and can now boast at having employed close to 3000 apprentices over its 25 year existence.

New Zealand Steel held its annual Apprentice of the Year awards ceremony on Tuesday 16th February 2016.  Among this year’s award recipients were etco* apprentices Quintin Cameron (Waiuku), who received the NZ Steel Electrical Apprentice of the Year award and James Thomas (Waiuku), who won the IMC award.
